E-KI February 12, 2004 Issue 6 Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel 8339 Old York Road, Elkins Park, PA 19027 215.887.8700 Torah Time Online Exodus: Yitro Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, is the namesake for this week’s Torah portion. This is one of only six portions in the entire Torah named for an individual. After leaving Egypt and wandering for three months, the children of Israel enter the wilderness of Sinai, in which they spent the next forty years. They camped at the base of Mount Sinai, and Moses ascended the mountain as instructed by God to receive the Ten Commandments. 1. I the Lord am your God… 2. You shall have no other God’s before me… 3. You shall not swear falsely by the name of the Lord your God... 4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy… 5. Honor your father and mother… 6. You shall not murder. 7. You shall not commit adultery. 8. You shall not steal. 9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 10. You shall not covet…
The Ten Commandments form the basis of morality and the main principles necessary for the survival of the Jewish people, both religiously and ethically. The Ten Commandments teaches us that worship alone is not sufficient. The first three commandments remind us of God’s presence in our lives. The remaining seven Commandments tell us what is expected of us as members of the People of the Covenant. We are to show our commitment by refraining from stealing, murdering, committing adultery, coveting the possessions of our neighbors; and refraining from false accusations. Judaism guides us not only in our relationships with others, it also requires us to respect ourselves. In the fourth commandment we are taught to refrain one day each week from work and to rest. Shabbat is our reminder to take care of our own physical and mental needs. Perhaps this commandment precedes the last six to serve as a reminder that in order to respect others we must begin by respecting ourselves. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Peter C.Rigler
