Shabbat Shelach Le’cha Numbers 13:1

Joshua 2:1

What would be your reaction if you suddenly found yourself in a strange place where you didn’t know anyone or anything? That’s exactly what happens to the Israelites in this week’s Torah portion. Twelve spies are sent by Moses to scout the land of Israel and report what they find. Are the people who dwell there strong or weak, few or many? Are the towns they live in open or fortified? Is the soil rich or poor? Is it wooded or open?

After 40 days, the scouts return, with a bunch of grapes so large it must be  supported by two men on a frame (now the symbol for Israel Tourism).

'"We came to the land you sent us to; it does indeed flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. However, the people who inhabit the country are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large; And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, 'The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there. We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them. '" (Numbers 13:32-33)  With the exception of Joshua and Caleb, all the spies claimed the land was impenetrable.

It is believed that out of fear the ten spies fabricated a story which sent the people into a state of panic; they wanted to go back to Egypt and slavery rather than risk entering the land of Israel. Wouldn’t most of us, faced with the unknown, prefer to return to the everyday world we’re familiar with?

God was incensed with the Israelites attitude. He threatened to obliterate the people, but Moses interceded in their behalf. The edict was rescinded, but as punishment for their lack of faith, the Israelites were doomed to wander the wilderness for forty years, a journey that should have taken only two. Hopefully, we can learn from this weeks portion that changes and challenges in our lives, while scary, can lead us to new lands and new discoveries.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Peter C. Rigler
