Parashat Ki Tetze

Deuteronomy 21:10

Isaiah 54:1

This week's Torah portion, Ki Tetze, is about the AJP.  That is, "The Association of the Jewish People."  This Association is different from other associations, such as the ACC, the Association of the American Conference of Cantors,  or a more famous one, AARP, American Association of Retired Persons.  To be part of those associations, one must pay dues, and the association is the main governing body of a group of people.  Our "Association" is only a part of what makes our community truly a community.

Within community we have many relationships – with God, with ourselves, and with the greater world. In this week's Torah portion we particularly focus on our relationship with others.  We define our "Association of Jewish People" by how, when, and where we associate with others.

We have a role in defining our "Association."  To illustrate, in Ki Tetze we are instructed not to associate with the Moabites and Ammonites because they hired Balaam the son of Beor to pronounce curses upon us.  We must be careful in our associations with other people.  For one association affects another.

May we benefit by the goodness of one association, and may the blessings of God be multiplied by our associations.

Shabbat Shalom!

Cantor Amy Lefko
