TORAH TIME ON-LINE
Top Seven Social Action
Successes of 2010
As we near the end of 2010, I wanted to reflect on the wonderful work our congregation has done this year responding to the needs of members of our community, city, country, and world. I am continually inspired by the energy and passion of our congregants. I want to thank everybody who has organized or volunteered for one of our many congregational initiatives. In early 2011 we will be have a pamphlet available listing all the ongoing Social Action projects in the congregation with the coordinators' contact information so it will be easy for you to get involved in our ongoing efforts to "Repair the World - L'taken et HaOlam."
Christmas Day Social Action Initiative - Last weekend over 80 congregants came to KI to assemble bags of non-perishable food to distribute to women and children who reside at the People's Emergency Center and homeless folks who attend the Arch Street Methodist Church. Both organizations were extremely appreciative of our efforts, and we hope to continue to build upon our relationships with them in 2011.
Hope for Haiti: A Community Benefit Concert - Nearly one year ago a devastating earthquake wreaked havoc in Haiti. KI responded to the incredible need on the ground to aid the survivors by putting together a community benefit concert to raise money for the American Red Cross. We partnered with the churches, synagogues, and schools in our area and put together a memorable evening of education, prayer, and entertainment. Plus, we raised $10,000 for the relief effort.
Lowell Elementary School Partnership - Inspired by workshops at the Religious Action Center's "Consultation on Conscience," the Social Action Committee decided to reach out to a local school and begin a partnership between our congregants and their students. Throughout the past year KI volunteers have been trained to read to children, run dance classes, and sew curtains for the library at Lowell Elementary School. This is a highly rewarding experience both for our members and the students.
High Holy Day Food Drive- Each year we distribute bags to congregants as they exit our Rosh Hashanah services for them to bring back filled with non-perishable goods at Yom Kippur. For the last several years we have donated our collection to Philabundance, who in turn distributes it to needy families throughout the region. This year we collected 3,500 pounds of food.
Sharing is Caring Federation Housing Hanukkah Dinner - During one night of Hanukkah each year, the K/G Auditorium is filled with residents from Federation Housing who are our guests for a festive meal. Our congregants work tirelessly to organize, prepare, and serve this meal. Our religious school students play music and sing to entertain the diners. This dinner is truly a highlight for both our congregation and those who join us for dinner.
American Red Cross Blood Drive - Several times a year KI acts as a host site for a blood drive. This is a huge mitzvah! The blood collected at KI is used in emergency situations to save lives. The American Red Cross depends on our volunteer donors to add blood to their banks.
Sefer Book Project - The Jewish tradition places a high priority on learning. We have thus created a program to collect gently used children's books and distribute them throughout the region to schools and hospitals. If you have books lying around your house and would like to donate them, please bring them to the Sefer Book Project collection area in the Rothschild Lobby.
I'm looking forward to continuing these and other projects with you in the coming year.
Shabbat Shalom and Happy New Year!
