Israel Science Project

This past summer Keneseth Israel received a grant from the Legacy Heritage Foundation for systemically integrating the study of Israel into all aspects of congregational life. This grant is awarded through a highly competitive and rigorous application process. This initiative is a joint project of the Temple Judea Museum and Keneseth Israel. We are one of only seven synagogues of all denominations across the United States to receive Legacy Heritage Innovation Project: Israel grants for 2009-10.

During this year, our activities will focus on highlighting the Israel experience in all areas of congregational life including education, worship, culture and social action through the lens of science and technology. A Scientific Advisory Committee, composed of congregants will be a key player in the program. Scientists from Ben Gurion University will also participate.

The centerpiece will be a congregation-wide educational program focusing on science in ancient and modern Israel, culminating in a science fair in which high school students develop projects relating Ancient Israel to modern scientific accomplishments. An exhibit featuring modern Israeli science and technology and archaeological items from the Temple Judea Museum collection entitled “Elemental Israel: From a Scientist’s Point of View” will be in the Museum from March 26, 2010 to June 30, 2010.

The year will also include interactive family education programs; Israel Story Hours for children; and the creation of an Israel Gallery in the Rothschild lobby; A special “Israel Newsletter” highlighting future and past activities and providing additional resources will be distributed to the congregation.

The Legacy Heritage Innovation Project: Israel Engagement aims to promote awareness of and connection to the people, culture, and history of Israel, and to encourage congregations to do so in an integrated, multi-pronged strategy rather than through stand-alone one-time programming. The Legacy Heritage Innovation Project is sponsored by Legacy Heritage Programming LLC, an affiliate of Legacy Heritage Fund Limited.

December 2009: The current Newsweek Magazine has an excellent article entitled “Soldiers of Fortune,” describing how the Israeli Army acts as an incubator for many of the Israeli high-tech inventions.  Read the article by clicking on this link:  http://www.newsweek.com/id/222793.  It is an excerpt from a new book entitled “Start-Up Nation” by Dan Senor and Saul Singer.  Copies of the book are available in the Meyers Library.
