One Book, One Jewish Community leads the way with a new book and author for 2008-2009
    My Father's Paradise
A Son's Search for his Jewish Past in Kurdish Iraq
    By Ariel Sabar
    (Algonquin Books, September, 2008)
OBOJC Companion Resource Guide available August, 2008

"Which are you, Ariel Sabar or Ariel Sabagha?" the fat man asked, sizing me up with his one good eye. "Which?"

Thus begins the journey of our American-born author of Iraqi Jewish descent as he endeavors to discover his roots. Sabar, the son of the last Jew to become Bar Mitzvah in Zakho, Iraq, before the expulsion of the Zakho Jewish community in 1951, vividly and magnificently portrays his father's journey and his own personal search to understand and embrace his heritage.
