NOVEMBER
NEWSLETTER
So what's Jewish
about Thanksgiving? What isn't? As with many of
our Jewish holiday celebrations, we will be
surrounded by food, family and friends,
traditions from our childhood, and memories we
are creating for our children. And like many of
our Jewish holidays, we celebrate freedom -
freedom from oppression, freedom for those who
sought to destroy us and freedom to practice who
we are. But Thanksgiving also allows us to also
celebrate the freedom we are offered to live as
full members of the greater American community
while also able to express ourselves as members
of the smaller American Jewish community. The
Kehillot of Greater Philadelphia allow us to
exercise that freedom through learning, social
and religious opportunities for engaging with
the Jewish community.
Can you think of a
way in which you might recognize the freedom to
be Jewish at your Thanksgiving celebration this
year? Let us know by sending your ideas to
Kehillot@jewishlearningventure.org!

Old York Road
Israel Committee: Doing
something for Israel:
In 2009, as Israel was
facing yet another Intifada,
members of the Old York Road
community met to discuss how
to bring the community
together to respond.
Concerned individuals from a
variety of backgrounds came
together on a moments notice
and created what was to be
the start of a brand new
endeavor for the Kehillah of
Old York Road. Individuals
who had never before worked
together had now found a
common purpose, "doing
something" for Israel,
regardless of political
beliefs, and thus the
Kehillah of Old York Road's
Israel Committee was born.
The committee is led
by Nancy Bell and Steve
Carpey and includes
representatives of various
agencies and institutions,
those who have served in the
IDF, have children living or
serving there now, or just
have a strong desire to keep
Israel in the forefront of
our consciousness.
In
the three years since it's
inception, the Israel
Committee has partnered with
the Israeli Consulate, JNF,
JFGP, AIPAC, FPRI, JCRC and
The David Project just to
name a few. They have
sponsored symposium, speaker
series, debates, rallies,
and celebrations. The
mission of increasing
support for Israel and
strengthening the Jewish
community of the Old York
Road corridor by promoting
increased identification
with and providing
opportunities for engagement
with Israel has enabled the
creation of a collaborative
venue for education and
advocacy for Israel in our
community.
