Rukhl Schaechter is the editor of the Yiddish Forward (Forverts), now an all-digital publication with active Facebook and YouTube channels, regularly translated articles and subtitled videos. One of the Forverts YouTubes, klezmer star Daniel Kahn’s Yiddish rendition of Leonard Cohen’s song, “Hallelujah“, has garnered close to two million views.
Since last April, as a way of bringing solace to people stuck at home due to the pandemic, she’s been producing a YouTube series called Yiddish Word of the Day, where she shares fun Yiddish words and proverbs, according to topic. The series has garnered close to 600,000 views.
Schaechter also produces and co-stars in the Forverts cooking videos. Together with food scholar and gourmet chef Eve Jochnowitz, she demonstrates how to prepare Ashkenazi delicacies like blintzes and cabbage strudel, which are at risk of being forgotten by new generations of American Jews with no living link to the east European food traditions.Schaechter is a graduate of Barnard College with a bachelors in Jewish literature from the Jewish Teachers Seminary – Herzliah, and also has a masters in early childhood education from Bank Street College. She is the mother of three grown sons, all fluent in Yiddish, and three grandchildren who are also being raised in the language.
