KLEZMER w/ BAILA MILLER

Klezmer is a Jewish musical tradition that was born in Eastern Europe in the Russian region known as “The Pale of Settlement.” Klezmer is full of surprises because it is rooted in 1800s European Nationalism, Regional Pride, and Individual Identity. The genre is a combination of Russian, Ukrainian, Rumanian, Polish as well as Asian influences. We will hear many examples of music and dance tunes that were incorporated by itinerant Jewish musicians who lived with and among Gypsies, nomads, and classically- trained performers. When Klezmer musicians moved to America, they influenced modern jazz significantly.
