Monday, March 21 10:30 am./ A RETURN TO ANATEVKA: 50 YEARS OF FIDDLER ON THE ROOF HAZZAN DAVID TILMAN Fiddler on the Roof opened on Broadway in 1964. Since that time, this immortal show has been seen by millions of people on every continent throughout the world. The much beloved songs have been translated into hundreds of languages. Let us look back at the history of Fiddler to understand the elements that have touched us all so deeply. What parts of the story are uniquely Jewish? What musical ingredients make the music so immediately identifiable as music of the Jewish people? This lecture features a multi-media Keynote presentation covering the history of this great Broadway show. We shall look at Maurice Schwartz, the first star to play Tevye in 1939, and other actors, including Zero Mostel, Hayim Topol, and Steven Skybell, the latest Tevye in the Yiddish version of Fiddler on the Roof.
