TEN JEWS, OTHER THAN MOSES AND QUEEN ESTHER, YOU SHOULD KNOW with MARVIN KREITHEN

The history of the Jews is more than what is in the Torah and Tanakh and the commentaries of the rabbinic Jews that make up the Talmud. It is in the lives of the many Jews who, throughout history, have made a difference in how we live our lives.   When I was in my teens my Jewish education was limited to a knowledge of those mythical biblical people of Torah fame:  Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their supporting cast. I have since become acquainted with the true heroes of the Jewish experience, the ones who magnificently fulfilled the essence of Judaism: to be, to do, and changed the world. This talk presents 10 such Jews. The LIFE of Judaism is not of the Torah, the LIFE of Judaism is with PEOPLE.

King Josiah. (640-609 BCE) The beginning of the compilation of the Torah

Yohanan ben Zakkai. (1st century CE) The man who saved Judaism

Judah ha-Nasi. (135-217 CE) Chief redactor and editor of the Mishnah

Glueckel of Hameln. (1646-1724). Life of Jews in the late 17th century.

Abraham Geiger (1810-1874), Driving force in the founding of Reform Judaism

Emma Lazarus. (1849-1887). activist for Jewish causes

Camille Pissaro. (1830-1903) organizer of the impressionist painters

Rosalind Franklin. (1920-1958) facilitator to the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA

Regina Jonas. (1902-1944) first woman to be ordained a rabbi

Victor Frankl (1905- 1997). Psychiatrist, author Man’s Search for Meaning
