JESUS AS AN AUTHENTIC SON OF ISRAEL AND WHY HIS JEWISHNESS IS IMPORTANT FOR JEWS AND CHRISTIANS TODAY w/ PHIL CUNNINGHAM

Jesus of Nazareth lived in a period called late Second Temple Judaism. Thanks to the study of the Dead Sea Scrolls and other Jewish texts of the time, we literally know more about his life and times than has been the case for a thousand years or more. By taking part in synagogue discussions of the books of the Torah, as Pope John Paul II has written, Jesus “nourished his mind and heart with them, using them in prayer and as an inspiration for his actions. Thus, he became an authentic son of Israel, deeply rooted in his own people’s long history.” Understanding Jesus in this first-century Jewish context dispels much of the caricature and polemic that have existed for too long among both Christians and Jews about his life and death. He is now widely seen as part of the diverse and dynamic Jewish communal life of the period, which has major implications for relations between Jews and Christians today.

Philip A. Cunningham is Professor of Theology and Co-Director of the Institute for Jewish-Catholic Relations of Saint Joseph’s University. The author of Seeking Shalom: The Journey to Right Relationship between Catholics and Jews, he is also the immediate past president of the International Council of Christians and Jews.
