Handel’s “Judas Maccabaeus” Performance

Keneseth Israel proudly announces a captivating musical performance set to take place on Friday, December 1, at 7 PM during their Shabbat Service preceding Hanukkah. The event will feature George Frideric Handel’s renowned oratorio, “Judas Maccabaeus,” a powerful musical portrayal of the story of Hanukkah.  This piece was written in 1745.

Join us for a Shabbat service and performance immersed in Handel’s “Judas Maccabaeus,” an oratorio resonating deeply with the values and historical significance cherished by the Jewish community.

As the holiday of Hanukkah approaches, this performance serves as a poignant artistic prelude, enriching our joyous celebration of the Festival of Lights.

Through vibrant harmonies and compelling narratives, “Judas Maccabaeus” celebrates the unwavering resilience and faith of the Jewish people, echoing their historical struggle against oppression.

A collective of 26 singers from Shir KI, including 22 volunteers and 4 professional singers and instrumental musicians will grace the stage alongside 30 singers from various Jewish choirs across the Old York Road Corridor and beyond. Together, they unite in musical harmony to bring this historical tale to life.  Handel’s oratorio draws striking parallels between historical resistance to oppression and the modern-day challenges faced by Israel, resonating particularly in the context of current struggles against threats such as Hamas and anti-semitism in the world particularly at this time.

Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to be part of a musical journey celebrating the rich heritage, resilience, and shared beliefs of hope, strength and courage by the Jewish community. This performance promises to captivate and inspire audiences of all ages.
