Dear KI Congregants,

There is a sacred partnership between congregational leadership; clergy and membership, which makes synagogues, thrive. Together, all of us work to ensure a balance of spiritual, communal, educational, cultural and social justice endeavors. However, in order for all of these sacred things to happen at our synagogue, it is our duty to be financially responsible and supportive of KI.

Over these past 19 months, KI leadership and clergy have been highly adaptive and have used the latest technology to bring services into our homes, keep us engaged in Jewish learning through adult education, “Rabbi Talks” and programs filled with music as well as innovative programs of multigenerational interest. We created new ways to celebrate life cycle events and nurture those in need while adhering to ever-changing public health and government guidelines. Our volunteers continued to do their multiple acts of Tikkun Olam by helping to feed the food insecure in our neighborhood through our HaMotzi Program and our Tzedek Center.

As the New Year 5782 begins, we are acutely aware of the changing demographics in our neighborhood and our own declining membership although we remain the largest synagogue in our area. With less and less of our annual budget needs met by membership dues, we have to turn to other sources of revenue to maintain our completeness as a synagogue. We have worked to keep our annual dues rates from rising and built a culture of giving through our successful Hazak campaign even as we lost our revenue stream from renting our facility to other organizations.

Now, at the beginning of the Jewish year, we ask you, our members, to keep KI financially strong with a generous High Holy Day Appeal gift. For those of you who give annually, thank you and please consider increasing your gift during these difficult times. For those who have not given previously, now is the time to step up and help. KI does incredible work both in our building and throughout the community. But we have costs to cover and literally the only place we have to go to for revenue is you, our beloved members. So please, be generous. Help insure that our services continue, our education programs continue and deeds of lovingkindness continue to multiply at KI!

Together, we can make 5782 another great year at KI.

In advance, thank you for your generosity and may you have a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

Rabbi Lance J. Sussman, Senior Rabbi

Janice Schwartz-Donahue, KI President
