It Starts With a Backpack

Preparation takes work.  As I get ready to return to school- yes, Organic Chemistry, I’ve been reflecting on how much energy, organization, and intention it truly takes to step into something new. The beginning of a school year can feel full of promise or overwhelming, depending on what support is in place.

This week’s Torah portion, Shoftim, teaches us to pursue justice—not just in systems, but in how we live. “Tzedek, tzedek tirdof” calls us to ensure success to our community in our daily actions. We live this value by helping all students begin the school year with tools and resources they need.

That’s exactly what Champions for Cheltenham is doing through tutoring, collecting school supplies, and generous donations.   This past week, I led a “Yoga for a Cause” class at Fitness 19 where we raised money to support Champions for Cheltenham. Your generosity continues through donations (you can still donate here!). That kind of support ripples outward. And through our collaborative work with our faith-based organization partners and the social worker at Cheltenham School District, our program will continue to support families facing eviction, in need of grocery and household gift cards, and school supplies.

Shoftim reminds us that justice isn’t abstract. It’s detailed, compassionate, and community driven. Together, we’re helping students step into the new year with the tools they need to thrive.

At home, I feel that same spirit of preparation: Aria is entering her senior year, Kira is going to be learning to drive.  These transitions are joyful, but they take effort. They remind me that readiness is rarely easy.   These transitions are best when they are supported within the loving arms of friends, families, and community. Thank you for being part that community!
