In this week’s Torah portion, the tribes of Reuben and Gad make an extraordinary commitment. Although they have already found the land where they hope to settle, they tell Moses, “We will not return to our homes until the other Israelites are in possession of their portion.” (Numbers 32:18) They are willing to postpone their own comfort until everyone else has safely reached theirs.” It is a reminder that covenant means more than traveling together; it means having one another’s back until everyone has reached the place they are meant to be.”

Standing beside someone we love isn’t always easy. Sometimes we wish they would make different choices or move forward more quickly. Sometimes giving someone the benefit of the doubt is one of the hardest things we are asked to do.

There is something deeply comforting about having people who “have our back.” It means knowing someone will stand with us, encourage us, and remain present even when life is messy or uncertain. That kind of steadfast support creates a sense of safety. It reminds us that we are stronger together and gives us faith that, even if we aren’t on the same page today, we can continue walking together until we are.
